First Day Student Questionnaire Hiya. This questionnaire is designed to help me know you a bit better, both intellectually and personally. Nobody else but me will see these responses, so feel free to make your answers as long as you like (I love stories and gossip!) Some of these questions may have already come up during our in-class introductions, and you can feel free to allude to that to refresh my memory (i.e., "Like I mentioned in class, I'm a second year etc. etc. ) Of course, you are free to skip any questions you don't wish to answer. I realize this questionnaire is a bit long, but I guarantee that if you take some time to really think about your answers, you'll be able to use this material on things like Artists and Teaching Statements in the future. So grab some coffee and have at it. 1. Your name (s) What's your "official" name? What do you like to be called? 2. Your email contact. What's your NYU email address? Is that your preferred email address? If not, is there an alternate you want me to use? 3. Your phone contact. What's a good phone number to use for contacting you? What's the best time to reach you by phone? 4. Your department and year. Are you an ITP student? If so, which year are you in? If not, which department are you in, and what year are you? 5.Other courses this semester. Which other courses are you talking this semester? If they are non-ITP courses, please give me a quick description of each. Which are your 'busy' days this semester? Which days do you think will wind up being your 'easy' ones? 6. Evening energy level questions. How does a 6:30 class mesh with your energy level? Are you planning to eat before you get to class, or bring food with you? Are you a 'night person', or is this going to be a tough class to get through, energy-wise?Are you coming to class right after work? 7. Your personal background. What sort of background do you have? For instance, are you a programmer, an advertising exectutive, a writer, a photographer--what? Is there anyplace online (like a home page) where I can get to know your work better? 8. Describe your best work. Describe a piece of work you've done (writing, artwork, digital stuff) that you are proud of. Tell me why it pleased you--was it difficult to research, or from the heart, or done on a tight deadline, or what? 9. Describe some projects you wish you had worked on. Which movies do you wish you had worked on as, say, a director, or cinematographer or technician? Which music videos have blown you away with pure production value? Which plays or live concerts? What excites you about these projects enough to make you think, "Wow, I wish I could have been a part of that? 10. Why ITP? Very briefly, what sorts of impulses led you to ITP as a place to study? 11.Your favorite courses. Tell me about your best courses at ITP (or anywhere else for that matter!) What sorts of things made the course stand out in your mind? In what ways did you feel challenged and/or excited by the material? 12. Your worst courses. Tell me about the worst course you ever took in your college career. What made it unbearable for you? What do you wish had been done differently? 13. What makes a great student? If somebody asked you, "What makes a great student?" What would your answer be? 14. What makes a great teacher? If someone asked you, "What makes a great teacher? What would your answer be? 15. Your minimum expectations for this class. Describe your minimum desires for this course (i.e., "it's something that fits in my schedule, and I'm hoping it's not too tough," or "I'd like to pass it...") 16. Your highest hopes for this class. Describe your maximum fantasy for this course (i.e., "I discover I am a fantastic writer and get offered a book contract", or "I make ground-breaking discoveries that complete change my approach to digital artwork" , etc.) 17. Your communication style. How do you communicate in class? Do you think of yourself as shy, outgoing, or somewhere in between those two poles? Do you tend to sit in the back or the front of a room? Do you like to dive into discussions, or do you tend to hear what other people have to say and make connections that way? 18. Regarding one on one meets. I'd like to know your feelings about meeting one on one with me. How many meetings a semester would feel like too little connection? How many would begin to feel like an imposition? What sorts of things would you hope I could prepare in advance to help with individual meetings? What sorts of things would you prepare in advance? 19. How do you feel about writing? Describe your relationship to writing. Are you comfortable doing it? Do you loathe it? Which parts would you like to improve? Do you keep a journal? 20. Social science background? Do you have any background in the social sciences (i.e. psychology, political science, anthropology, sociology, media studies?) Do you feel comfortable reading material that sometimes veers toward the theoretical, or would you like us to proceed carefully during those times? 21. Comfort level with Bobst research tools. Do you know how to navigate NYU's Bobst database resources? Do you feel comfortable accessing things like Article First and Lexus/Nexus through NYU, or would you like some refreshing? Do you know how to search the ACM database for published papers or should we quickly go over that in class? 22 . Your time on the Net. What year did you first go on the Net? Who introduced you to the Net? What percentage of your time would you say you 'work' on the Net (i.e. researching for papers, teleconferencing for business)? What percentage of your time would you say you 'play' on the Net (i.e. goof off)? Where do you like to goof off online? 23. Your best and worst parts of the Net. Which parts of the Net do you like best (i.e. which sites do you try to visit once a week or so?) Which parts annoy you? Is there anywhere you feel you have a presence (i.e. an IRC channel where people know you, or a home page where you direct people to see your stuff?) 24. Politics and you. How would you qualify your political leanings? Do you think of yourself as interested in the stuff of network news, or more focused on other things right now?
