Ten (relatively) easy steps to using LiveJournal

In order to post on LiveJournal, you'll need to complete the steps below. They seem somewhat lengthy written out here, but they honestly only take about 10 minutes to complete.

1. Contact Terri for a LiveJournal free access code. If you are a member of the "Subcultures in Cyberspace" class, you'll be sent a code as soon as you complete your questionnaire.

Please DO NOT write to me requesting a code if you are not an ITP student or faculty member. To my horror, this web page comes up as the number one entry when one Googles "livejournal access codes."

If you ARE an ITP student or faculty member and want to experiment with LiveJournal, shoot me a quick piece of mail--I have about ten free access codes in my stash, and I'll give them out on a first come, first served basis.

Alternately, of course, you could just pay to sign up on LiveJournal yourself and get an account. I think a two month account is five dollars.

2. Once you have your code, go to http://livejournal.com/create.bml

3. Enter your code in the box and then follow the steps to set up your own LiveJournal account.

4. IMPORTANT!!! Write me back and tell me what Live Journal name you've chosen, so I can add it to my "Friends" list. This allows you to read my locked journal entries.

5. Finally, make sure you are logged in to Live Journal permanently by going to typing your username and password at the top of this page: http://www.livejournal.com/ . Once you are logged in, you are offered the opportunity to to "change expiration date to NEVER". That's how I have my computer set, so I don't have to log in everytime.

6. To check and see that all is well, go to my page at http://www.livejournal.com/tsenft and check to see that you can read entries with little pictures of "locks" next to them. These are the locked entries only friends can read.

7. Now you have your very own Live Journal Account, and can begin putting up an online journal of your own, if you wish. Additionally/alternately, you can read other people's journal's from your own "friends list" which you can create at http://www.livejournal.com/friends/edit.bml . If you want to put me on your friends list, my Live Journal name is tsenft. If you want to search for other people to read by interest, you can to: http://www.livejournal.com/interests.bml . If you want to search by country, you can go here: http://www.livejournal.com/directory.bml (but be warned that lots of people lie about their country of origin. There cannot possibly be so many skate punk kids hailing from Afghanistan, for example.)

8. Members of the Subcultures in Cyberspace class are required to participate in our private "Subcultures" community at http://www.livejournal.com/users/subcultures. General ITP folks can talk with LiveJournal users at the public "ITPon LJ" community at http://www.livejournal.com/users/itponlj. Remember, you need to be a member of LiveJournal.com first before you join any community. Once you have a LiveJournal account, joining a community costs nothing, and you can join as many communities as you want. An open community will have the option "To join, click here" on the Community Info page, where "click here" is the link to join. A closed community will state "To become a member you must contact its maintainer", where "its maintainer" is a link to the profile page for the owner of the community.

9. If you are in the "Subcultures of Cyberspace" class, you'll want to add both the "subcultures" and the "itponnyu" communities to your Friends Page, so you stay up to date on what is being said there.Provided that you're logged in, all you have to do is click the "Monitor Community" button, located on the toolbar on the Community Info page. Alternately, you can edit your list of Friends
(http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=61).

10. Any question you could possibly have about using LiveJournal will be answered by checking the LiveJournal FAQ. LiveJournal prides itself on being open source and volunteer-run. To find out the particulars, visit the LiveJournal Volunteer Development Forums
