Assignment 11: Final: Give a Persuasive Speech
For your final exam, you will take a position on a topic in
Communication Studies and argue that position to the class. In addition to
making your case clearly and effectively, you will also need to be ready for
questions on your topic from the class.
Your final consists of the following steps:
1. Go to "Viewpoints Document."
Pick a topic on the list that appeals to you and read both
viewpoints on the topic (the titles are hyperlinked to web articles.)
3. After reading both viewpoints, ask yourself, “Which of these two
views do I agree with most strongly?” This decision forms the basis
of your persuasive speech.
4. Go to Terri's Tips on Giving Persuasive Speeches,
and read everything there.
5. Download your persuasive
speech worksheet.
5. When you get to the part of your worksheet that asks for Three Supporting
Reasons for your argument, return to the Viewpoint essay you chose as the
one you agreed with most. The supporting reasons for your argument are somewhere
in that document. (If you cannot find the reasons, you aren’t reading
closely enough. If this is the case, you should outline the essay just as
you outlined your selection of Blink. You’ll find reasons once you outline
the material.)
6. When you get to the part of the worksheet that asks for Two Opposing Arguments,
you should do two things:
a. Look at the Viewpoint essay with which you agree. Sometimes there opposing
arguments and refutations right in there.
b. Return to the Viewpoint essay with which you disagreed. That essay will
have at least two arguments you can use. Of course, the responsibility for
rebutting those arguments lies with you.
7. Finish off your worksheet, and use it to put together a COMPLETE, TYPED,
FULL-SENTENCE outline for your persuasive speech. Email this to Terri a WEEK
PRIOR to your speech. Ineed this time so I can edit what you have.
8 . Develop PowerPoint slides for your persuasive speech.
9 . Deliver your speech.
10. That's it!
